US AK: OPED: Losing The Word War

Juneau Empire, 22 Jul 2010 – Leonard Pitts Jr. had an excellent editorial entitled "Battle of words in War on Drugs" in the July 19 Juneau Empire. In it, he points out that we have spent untold billions of dollars, ruined untold millions of lives and racked up the highest incarceration rate in the world to fight drug use and he concludes that the War on Drugs is a failure. To help clarify just why it is such a failure I’d like to expand on his thinking about the battle of words a bit. In order to survive as a congruent civilization, all cultures must determine how they will categorize the human behaviors of its members and thereby develop social mores, regulations, laws, rules and social expectations which help to make life more predictable and minimize social chaos. The primary behavioral categories are good, bad, sick, stupid, and crazy. Thus social means are developed to reward the good, punish the bad, cure the sick, educate the stupid, and contain the crazy.

Juneau Empire, 19 Jul 2010 – Ron Allen probably thinks Alice Huffman has been smoking something. Huffman, president of the California Conference of the NAACP, recently declared support for an initiative that, if passed by voters in November, will decriminalize the use and possession of marijuana. Huffman sees it as a civil rights issue.

US AK: Drug Testing Update

Juneau Empire, 11 Oct 2009 – The Juneau School District has now entered its final planning phase in its attempt to stop school drug use by randomly testing high school student athletes. The testing is set to begin this month. This means that students currently involved in fall sports and those who will be in winter sports will be among the first to be tested for illegal controlled substances.

US AK: Pop Quiz? Group Wants Mandatory Drug Testing Of Students

Juneau Empire, 10 May 2009 – The perception of rampant teenage OxyContin abuse in Juneau is fomenting support for mandatory random drug testing of high school students in sports and activities. A group calling itself Taking Action has formed and is pushing for drug testing in schools. Earlier this week, Juneau-Douglas High School football coach Bill Chalmers told the School Board that he was considering quitting coaching if the district doesn’t implement a drug testing program by the fall.

US AK: Column: Government Needs To Reconsider Failed Drug War

Northern Light, 07 Apr 2009 – While wasting some time on Facebook when I really should have been studying (a famous excuse most of us live by), I noticed an interesting advertisement that caught my eye and set my heart aflutter: Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP). With all the hubbub bustling down in California as marijuana-advocates are vying to get the herb legalized, which may greatly aide the state’s suffering budget, and thousands of citizens flooding President Obama’s Internet portal with requests for him to consider legalization, pot is something that is on a lot of peoples’ minds.

US AK: PUB LTE: Right Direction

Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, 06 Mar 2009 – To the editor: On Feb. 25, Attorney General Eric Holder told a group of reporters "What Obama said during the campaign … is now American policy." What was Eric Holder referring to? Raids against state licensed medical marijuana dispensaries and cultivators. The Drug Enforcement Agency has been going after these co-ops ever since states legalized marijuana for medicinal purposes, with California being the main stage.
