The Press Democrat, 03 Jun 2013 – Healdsburg City Council members Monday opted to form a task force to study the controversial question of medical marijuana cultivation, including whether the fragrant plants should be allowed outdoors, or confined inside. In an attempt to balance the need of medical marijuana patients versus the periodic complaints over the skunk-like aroma the plants can produce — as well as the potential for attracting crime and violence – — the council agreed to study the issue further.

New York Times, 01 Jun 2013 – A medical marijuana store owner whose prosecution by the federal authorities highlighted vast disparities in how California and the Justice Department are responding to the medical marijuana industry abandoned a six-month battle against Washington on Friday and pleaded guilty to 10 charges of marijuana cultivation and distribution. The man, Matthew Davies, 35, had argued that his store in Stockton operated in accordance with California laws, after working extensively with accountants and lawyers before opening the business. But Benjamin B. Wagner, the United States attorney for the Eastern District of California, said, "Our investigation showed that it was all about the money." Los Angeles Daily News, 03 Jun 2013 – The crackdown against medical pot shops across Southern California began as soon as the state’s highest court ruled last month that cities could enforce their dispensary bans, Police have raided a legion of medical marijuana dispensaries across the Southland, while legal threats have been issued to hundreds more. From Santa Ana to San Bernardino, cities that had put the kibosh on the pot shops now had potent legal ammunition in which to shut them down.

Sacramento News & Review, 30 May 2013 – So, voters in Los Angeles just passed a ballot measure to shut down all but 135 or so cannabis clubs. What gives? – -SoCal Sal Who knows? The voters just kicked through a law that enacts most of the regulations from an ordinance passed by the Los Angeles City Council in 2007. This law states that all the clubs that registered with the city prior to the 2007 cutoff date will be allowed to stay open. Everyone else has to shut down.

The Chico News & Review, 30 May 2013 – County Wants State’s Help in Controlling Marijuana Gardens A request by Butte County for help from the state in getting a handle on large marijuana gardens in the local foothills has been rebuffed. On May 7, a letter signed by Supervisor Bill Connelly was sent to the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board expressing concern about environmental damage caused by big pot-growing operations. The letter asked that the state step in and help enforce the federal Clean Water Act.
