The Press Democrat, 17 Oct 2010 – Would Prop. 19 Cut Crime And Boost Economy, Or Harm Public Safety, Health In his white cowboy hat, bluejeans and boots, John Pinches might seem an unlikely champion for the legalization of marijuana.
US CA: Medical Marijuana for the Masses
San Jose Mercury News, 17 Oct 2010 – In the year since U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced federal drug agents would stop targeting medicinal marijuana use where state law sanctioned it, Santa Clara County — like other parts of California — has become the Wild West. But suddenly, the sheriff has ridden into town.
US CA: OPED: Proposition 19 Is No Solution to Drug Problems
San Jose Mercury News, 17 Oct 2010 – Supporters of Proposition 19 portray marijuana legalization as a panacea for all of California’s problems. They argue that it will fix California’s budget crisis, vanquish drug cartels, save law enforcement resources and relieve prison overcrowding. It will accomplish none of these things. Proposition 19 won’t even legalize marijuana, which would remain punishable by federal law. The reality is that Proposition 19 is a poorly constructed and misleading initiative funded mainly by the personal fortune of one marijuana dealer. It will increase drug use among our youth, waste taxpayer dollars and create new regulatory burdens for local governments.
US CA: Column: Taking a Hit for a Good Cause
Los Angeles Times, 17 Oct 2010 – Does Pot Impair Drivers More Than Booze. Columnist Puts It to a Test. The man on the other end of the phone wanted me to go to a dispensary and buy three-sixteenths of an ounce of high-grade dope and another three-sixteenths of an ounce of medium-grade.
US CA: PUB LTE: Ready To Hot Box In Celebration
Times-Standard, 17 Oct 2010 – I am so excited that I can’t keep it to myself. For the first time in my life, I will assist in the process of legalizing marijuana by voting yes on Proposition 19! I am glad this proposition does not affect my rights as a 215 patient. As a consumer, I will no longer have to worry about possessing a personal use amount. As a supporter of domestic hemp production, marijuana legalization will eliminate the barriers to this enterprise. My main rebuttal to those opposed to the measure: Legalization is a process. Once Proposition 19 passes, it will be up to the state, counties and courts to work out the particulars.
US CA: Eureka Neighbors Take To Courts To Fight Grow House – And Win
Times-Standard, 17 Oct 2010 – The topic of neighborhood grow houses has many Humboldt County residents flummoxed, but a group of neighbors in Eureka banded together and did something about it. At first blush, the 200 block of Hillsdale Street in Eureka doesn’t seem much different than other Eureka neighborhoods. Tall, two-story brightly painted Victorians line both sides of the street, sitting behind well-kept lawns. A few modern homes are sprinkled between the old houses. There is little traffic on the street.
US CA: Column: A Most Noxious Weed
Napa Valley Register, 17 Oct 2010 – To a visitor, the street appears so very normal. Tidy home after tidy home. There’s the sense that nothing exciting ever happens here. But wait. What’s that smell? It’s more than funky. More like stinky. Clearly, something mighty peculiar is going on.
US CA: San Bernardino: Cypress Hill Smokeout Draws Thousands
Press-Enterprise, 17 Oct 2010 – The Cypress Hill Smokeout music festival Saturday at the National Orange Show in San Bernardino was as much about marijuana as it was about music. Hip-hop and Latin groups shared the stage with DJs, while advocates of medical marijuana and Prop.19, the California ballot measure to legalize marijuana for adults, extolled the virtues of pot while also registering new voters.
US CA: Marin Law Enforcement Officials Disagree With Local
Marin Independent Journal, 17 Oct 2010 – There is plenty of support for Proposition 19 in Marin County, but not among Marin’s top law enforcement officials. Proposition 19, which is on the Nov. 2 ballot, would make it legal for people 21 years old or older to possess, cultivate or transport marijuana for personal use. It would allow local governments to regulate and tax commercial production and sale of marijuana. The measure prohibits people from smoking marijuana while minors are present.
