US NV: On the Right: End Drug War
Reno News & Review, 18 Apr 2013 – The rightist Nevada Public Research Institute has called for an end to drug prohibition. "Nevada governments spent roughly $258 million in 2008 to enforce drug prohibition within the state’s borders," the group said in lengthy paper on Nevada issues titled Solutions 2013. "This includes $51 million for policing, $62 million in judicial expenses and $150 million for corrections. As these figures indicate, enforcing the prohibition of a substance for which there is significant demand can be a costly proposal."
US NV: PUB LTE: Prohibition Doesn’t Make Much Sense
Las Vegas Sun, 17 Apr 2013 – Nevada had better act fast if it wants to cash in on marijuana tourism. As evidenced by the 2012 elections, the days when our federal government can successfully get away with confusing the drug war’s tremendous collateral damage with a comparatively harmless plant are quickly coming to an end. If the goal of marijuana prohibition is to subsidize violent drug cartels, prohibition is a grand success. The drug war distorts supply-and-demand dynamics so that big money grows on little trees. If the goal of marijuana prohibition is to deter use, prohibition is a catastrophic failure. The United States has double the rate of marijuana use as the Netherlands, where marijuana is legal. The criminalization of Americans who prefer marijuana to martinis has no basis in science. It’s time to stop the pointless arrests and instead tax legal marijuana.
US NV: PUB LTE: Medical Marijuana
Las Vegas Review-Journal, 17 Apr 2013 – To the editor: I just got my medicinal marijuana card and was disappointed to see it replaced my driver’s license. It has a large green band across the middle saying I’m a marijuana user. Now every time I buy something and they need to confirm my ID, they now see my medicine. There are thousands of different medications people are on, and they aren’t displayed every time you need to prove your identity.
US NV: AB 402 Renews Marijuana Debate In Nevada
Ely Times, 12 Apr 2013 – The clock is ticking on AB 402, which would legalize, regulate and tax marijuana. The bill had a hearing last Friday that drew debate from proponents and opponents of legalizing the drug. Washington and Colorado have legalized marijuana in the past. "I’ll tell you they’re doing some swapping in the hallways to get it out," Assemblyman John Ellison said.
US NV: Column: Why Legal Pot Is Coming to Nevada, and Why We
Las Vegas Sun, 12 Apr 2013 – It was no great feat, but as I predicted last October, Colorado and Washington have legalized pot, and Nevada is now in danger of losing our rightful place as the capital of forbidden fun. On his tourism blog, Arthur Frommer wrote last year that we could "expect a torrent of new tourism to Seattle and Denver."
