US NM: Column: Tax Law Burns Medical Marijuana Firms

Albuquerque Journal, 27 Aug 2012 – Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson stands alone as the candidate for president who favors reforms of drug laws to include legalization and regulation of marijuana use. I don’t know the feelings of the other candidates, but I can say that none is willing to go on record as favoring legalization of marijuana. Huh, you say, this is a tax column, is it not? Well it turns out that the federal policy on marijuana is having quite a detrimental effect on the business of medical marijuana. At last count, at least 17 states and the District of Columbia permit regulated use of marijuana for medical purposes.

US NM: Poet, Tour Seek Peace In Mexico

Albuquerque Journal, 18 Aug 2012 – LAS CRUCES – Mexican poet Javier Sicilia called for a moment of silence for the victims of his homeland’s drug violence, a potent reminder of the anguish that spawned a cross-country Caravan for Peace with Justice and Dignity that made a stop here Friday. Since the murder last year of his son, Juan Francisco, a seemingly random victim of bloody fighting between warring drug cartels, Sicilia has emerged as a powerful critic of the war on drugs, corruption in Mexico and that nation’s law enforcement approach to drug consumption.

US NM: Caravan For Peace Stops In Santa Fe

The New Mexican, 20 Aug 2012 – On Monday morning, a large crowd gathered around the bandstand on the Plaza. In front of the bandstand, fliers and posters were displayed on the ground, many bearing the photographs of people who are missing or dead. Placards calling for an end to the war on drugs were carried by many, and incense wafted from a small altar on the bandstand, decorated with conch shells and feathers. The gathering on the Plaza was the eighth stop for the Caravan for Peace, which is making a 27-city tour to highlight the tragedies of the war on drugs, according to a news release prepared by ProgressNow New Mexico, a nonprofit that helped handle publicity for the Caravan.
