The New Mexican, 24 Sep 2011 – Four years after New Mexico’s Medical Cannabis Program was created, nearly 4,000 New Mexico residents have been approved to use the herb as medicine, and 25 nonprofit producers have been licensed to sell it to them. New Mexico’s system for regulating those producers is being adopted by other states as a model for allowing medicinal use of marijuana without seeing pot dispensaries pop up on every street corner, as they have in California and Colorado.

US NM: Editorial: Medical Pot Goes Public
Albuquerque Journal, 03 Aug 2011 – The first New Mexico Medical Marijuana and Natural Healing Expo was held in Albuquerque last weekend, and thousands were expected to attend. It points out the ridiculous position advanced just a year ago by then Health Secretary Dr. Alfredo Vigil, who insisted that public revelation of the doctors or producers involved would lead to catastrophe — even though doctors and growers were already openly advertising their services on the Internet.

US NM: Editorial: DEA Shouldn’t Offer Medical Opinions
Clovis News Journal, 21 Jul 2011 – Once again, government servants have told Americans that marijuana ranks right up there with heroin. The Drug Enforcement Agency ruled on July 8 that marijuana has "no accepted medical use" and will continue as a schedule 1 drug – the most forbidden category. The DEA is a law enforcement bureaucracy. The medical opinions of law enforcement bureaucrats should be of little interest. We do not ask cops to make laws; we pay cops to enforce the laws established by constitutions or enacted by the people or the decisions of their representatives.

US NM: A Lost Cause? The War On Drugs Turns 40
The New Mexican, 18 Jun 2011 – Some anniversaries provide an occasion for celebration or reflection, others a time for action. Friday marked 40 years since President Richard Nixon, citing drug abuse as "public enemy No. 1," officially declared a "war on drugs." A trillion dollars and millions of ruined lives later, the war on drugs remains a miserable failure.
