US CA: California: Council Bans Marijuana Dispensaries

New York Times, 25 Jul 2012 – The Los Angeles City Council voted on Tuesday to ban the hundreds of medical marijuana dispensaries that have cropped up across the city. The council acted after some residents said the shops had been a blight on neighborhoods. City officials estimate that there could be more than 900 dispensaries. The ban eliminates storefronts, but patients and caregivers are still allowed to grow medical marijuana. The city has wrestled with its medical marijuana ordinances for years, trying to provide safe and affordable access to the drug for legitimate patients while addressing concerns by neighborhood groups that areas were being overrun by dispensaries and marijuana users. – — MAP posted-by: Jay Bergstrom
