US CA: PUB LTE: Supervisors Should Respect Election Law

Chico Enterprise-Record, 05 Feb 2013 – On Feb. 12, the Butte County Board of Supervisors will consider a new medical-marijuana ordinance. Last June, the voters of Butte County rejected a similar growing ordinance by an overwhelming majority. It failed in every supervisor district, in every city, and in the unincorporated areas. It appears that this fact has been forgotten. One of the most fundamental rights of a citizen of California is the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances. That’s what a referendum is all about. Attempting to pass this ordinance violates California Elections Code Section 9241, which clearly states that if "a majority of the voters voting on the ordinance do not vote in favor of it, the ordinance shall not again be enacted by the legislative body for a period of one year."

US CA: PUB LTE: No Respect For Democratic Process

Chico Enterprise-Record, 29 Aug 2012 – The recent actions of three Butte County supervisors show their complete lack of respect for our democratic process. By voting to move ahead with an ordinance that bans all outdoor medical marijuana only months after voters rejected Measure A, they are spitting in the eyes of the very same voters who elected them to office. The previous ordinance failed in every city and supervisor district in Butte County. It even failed to pass in the unincorporated areas. After claiming to be "fiscally conservative" and in support of "smaller government," the supervisors are now taking us down the rat hole of government bureaucracy, excessive regulation and unnecessary spending.
