Daily Titan, 13 Oct 2010 – On Nov. 2, people will vote on Proposition 19, the legalization of marijuana. Proposition 19, also known as Regulate and Control Cannabis Act of 2010, would allow any person over the age of 21 to obtain one ounce of marijuana to be used for personal consumption. It would further allow the growth of up to 25 square feet of marijuana.
US CA: Edu: PUB LTE: Attitudes Toward Cannabis Are Changing
City on a Hill Press, 14 Oct 2010 – It’s encouraging to read that laws and attitudes toward cannabis (marijuana) are changing ("County Starts Regulating Medical Marijuana Dispensaries," Oct. 7). California was the first state to prohibit the relatively safe, God-given plant cannabis, the first to legalize it for sick citizens and now may become the first to re-legalize it completely by voting "YES" on Proposition 19. A sane or moral reason to cage responsible adults for using the plant doesn’t exist. Ending cannabis prohibition and extermination in North America is one of the most important issues of our time.
US CA: Web: Schwarzenegger’s Pot Reform Doesn’t Cut It
AlterNet, 14 Oct 2010 – WE NEED THE WHOLE ENCHILADA OF LEGALIZATION California’s Prop. 19 Would Bring Real Reform, Converting a Black Market into a Legitimate Industry With Jobs, Tax Revenue and Economic Development. Schwarzenegger’s reducing marijuana to an infraction is great, but it doesn’t go far enough. Prop. 19 would bring real reform, converting a black market into a legitimate industry with jobs, tax revenue and economic development.
US CA: Too High
Sacramento News & Review, 14 Oct 2010 – Is Ranch Cordova Trying to Tax Cannabis Out of Reach? Marijuana isn’t totally legal in California–yet–but lawmakers in both Rancho Cordova and the city of Sacramento are ready for potentially high times ahead. For instance, if Proposition 19 passes, a trio of local measures also is up for vote this November that could impose big taxes on recreational and medical cannabis.
US CA: Editorial: No on Proposition 19
San Jose Mercury News, 14 Oct 2010 – Legalizing Marijuana’s Inevitable, but This Is the Wrong Way The state Board of Equalization estimates that 400,000 Californians smoke marijuana every day. More than 3 million use it at least once a year. Clearly, the war on drugs is a massive failure, at least regarding pot.
US CA: Editorial: Proposition 19 a Blurry Vision
Chico Enterprise-Record, 13 Oct 2010 – Our view: The medical marijuana initiative was flawed, destined to be fought and clarified in the courts, and so is this proposition. There’s a reason no state in the nation has legalized marijuana — because it’s a wacky idea.
US CA: Medical Cannabis Groups Present Draft Policies
Times-Standard, 13 Oct 2010 – The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors seems to be receiving plenty of advice on how medical marijuana should be regulated. The Humboldt Medical Marijuana Advisory Panel (HuMMAP) presented its draft policy — which included graduated licensing fees for cultivation starting at $200 a year for 100 square feet — to the board Tuesday during public comment.
US CA: Column: New Pot Law: Can It Derail Prop. 19?
Ventura County Star, 13 Oct 2010 – For 35 years in California, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana has been a crime like no other. Although classified as a misdemeanor, under no circumstance can a conviction result in jail time or even in a person being placed on probation. It carries with it only a fine, capped at $100. When police officers make such an arrest, they often refer to it as a "marijuana ticket." There’s not a lot of hassle involved, other than processing the evidence. No one gets booked into jail after such an arrest.
US CA: Burned Sign Backlash
The Santa Barbara Independent, 12 Oct 2010 – Anti-Pot Activist’s Home Suffers Late Night Vandalism The theft of campaign signs in Santa Barbara during election season is nothing new. But when one is burned — especially one that calls for a citywide ban on medical marijuana dispensaries — it’s enough to rouse the ire of elected officials who have made no secret of their hatred for herb.
