US CO: 420 Day Has Whole New Meaning

Washington Times, 18 Apr 2013 – Wash., Colo. Are Ready to Party DENVER – Thousands of pot smokers plan to descend on Colorado and Washington this weekend for what may be the biggest marijuana celebration in U.S. history. Saturday marks the first "420 Day" – the unofficial pot lovers’ jamboree held every April 20, based on the slang identifier "420" – since voters in both states passed initiatives legalizing adult use of marijuana in November. Although pot isn’t exactly legal in either state yet, that will not stop the weed-toking faithful from throwing bodacious parties.

More than 50,000 are expected to light up outdoors in Denver’s Civic Center Park on April 20 to celebrate marijuana legalization. Thousands more are headed here for the nation’s first open-to-all Cannabis Cup, April 20-21, a domestic version of an annual marijuana contest and celebration in Amsterdam. Expected guests at the Cannabis Cup, a ticketed event taking place inside the Denver Convention Center, include Snoop Lion, the new reggae and marijuana-loving persona for the rapper better known as Snoop Dogg.

US CO: LTE: Hancock Right On Pot

Denver Post, 19 Apr 2013 – Re: "Hit and miss on Denver pot regs," April 17 editorial. It surprised me to see that The Denver Post went after Mayor Michael Hancock in its Tuesday editorial on Amendment 64 at a time when I think he should be applauded. The mayor has shown a real backbone by standing up for Coloradans’ health and safety in regards to the new recreational marijuana law.

US CO: Editorial: Straighten Out The Marijuana Mess

The Gazette, 16 Apr 2013 – A majority of Colorado voters told state government last November that marijuana should be legal. They did so after hearing promises of a legal marijuana trade generating money for education while mostly destroying a dangerous black market that made mockery of drug laws. Ads made legal marijuana revenues sound like manna from heaven. Marijuana remains illegal by federal law. That means little in Colorado because the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Printz v. United States that federal authorities may not direct local or state law enforcers to administer or enforce federal laws. Given the limited presence of federal cops in Colorado, and other states, federal laws will do little to curtail marijuana use and transactions in Colorado.
