US MI: OPED: Want To Empty The Jail? Change How We Handle Drug Offenses

The Muskegon Chronicle, 04 Aug 2012 – I’m a criminal defense attorney. My practice includes court-appointed work for the many indigent of Muskegon County. I recently attended a meeting of the Muskegon County Board. On the agenda was funding for Muskegon County public defense. Several of my colleagues spoke to the board about high case loads and low pay. When they finished, one of the board members looked our way and asked how we could complain about pay when we can’t seem to do much about chronic jail overcrowding in Muskegon County. I wanted to respond, but couldn’t find the words. It is true, after all. Muskegon County has a severe jail overcrowding problem. Now that I’ve had time to reflect, I feel compelled to offer a response.

US HI: PUB LTE: Pot From God

Hawaii Tribune Herald, 13 Mar 2012 – Another reason to allow sick citizens to use cannabis (marijuana) for pain that doesn’t get mentioned ("Medical marijuana bill goes to the House for consideration," March 7) is because it is biblically correct, since God indicates He created all the seed-bearing plants, saying they are all good, on literally the very first page (Genesis 1:11-12 and 29-30). The only biblical restriction placed on cannabis is to accept it with thankfulness (1 Timothy 4:1-5).

US AK: PUB LTE: Marijuana Users Contribute

Anchorage Daily News, 08 Jan 2012 – I strongly disagree with Bill Zeddies ("Those Stoned On Marijuana Don’t Contribute To Common Good," ), There are enough examples of cannabis (marijuana) users who contribute to society to fill volumes. From the 1st presidents to the last few, from doctors, computer designers, scientists, musicians and people from every walk of life and every occupation. Persecuting and discriminating against cannabis users doesn’t change the fact that cannabis users do in fact contribute to society and have for thousands of years. The question is: how does caging a responsible human for using the relatively safe, extremely popular God-given plant (see the first page of the Bible), contribute to society?

US NV: PUB LTE: End Pot Prohibition

Reno News & Review, 29 Dec 2011 – Re "Is Obama in control?" (Editorial, Dec. 22): When the last number of presidents have used cannabis (marijuana) recreationally, there should be no question cannabis prohibition should automatically be terminated, especially since roughly 70 percent of Americans support it. Roughly 50 percent of Americans support-and that number is increasing-legalizing and regulating cannabis because it is one of America’s worst policy failures in history. Cannabis prohibition is perpetuated exactly because President Obama is in control. If citizens were in control, cannabis prohibition, persecution, discrimination and extermination would end immediately.
