The Times, 19 May 2013 – I write in response to New Jersey Assemblywoman Mary Pat Angelini’s guest opinion "Legalizing marijuana would send the wrong message to kids" (May 13). I’d like readers to consider what message we send to children when we allow tobacco, alcohol and a long list of potentially unhealthy foods to be legally sold to adults.
US CO: PUB LTE: Marijuana Is A Much Safer Alternative To Alcohol
Daily Camera, 17 May 2013 – Thanks for publishing Edward R. Arnold’s thoughtful letter: "Marijuana is safer than tobacco or alcohol" (May 12). I’d like to add that our annual tobacco vs. marijuana kill ratio is about 400,000 to zero. And our annual alcohol vs. marijuana kill ratio is about 75,000 to zero.
US CA: PUB LTE: Dealers Prison Term Too Harsh
San Diego Union Tribune, 29 Jan 2013 – In response to "Pot dealer to do 8 years in prison" (UTSanDiego.com, Jan. 25): So another felony gardener is going to learn how to become a "real" criminal. Who were the victims? – Kirk Muse Mesa, Ariz. – — MAP posted-by: Jo-D
US CA: PUB LTE: Still A Drug War
Los Angeles Times, 25 Jan 2013 – Re "Overkill in the war on pot," Jan. 22 Kudos to Marie Myung-Ok Lee for her outstanding Op-Ed article on the federal government’s intransigence on marijuana policy. I’d like to add that as a U.S. Senate candidate from Illinois in 2004, Barack Obama said that the war on drugs had been an "utter failure." So what has President Obama done about this failure? Escalate the war.
US HI: PUB LTE: Drug War Diverts From Real Crime
Honolulu Star-Advertiser, 22 Dec 2012 – Thanks for publishing Froma Harrop’s thoughtful column, "Laws easing pot prohibition reflect sense of decency" (Star-Advertiser, Dec. 15). I’d like to add that those who think that marijuana prohibition somehow protects our children and society might with to go online to YouTube.com and search for "Judge Jim Gray" or search for "Law Enforcement Against Prohibition." You will see that marijuana prohibition substantially increases all other crime.
US OR: PUB LTE: Pot Prohibition Provides A Lure
Herald and News, 01 Nov 2012 – I am writing about the op-ed from the so-called Citizens for Safe Schools: "Marijuana prohibition is not a burden on society" on Oct. 21. If you want as many children as possible to use marijuana, keep it a criminalized substance. Marijuana use has increased 1,000-fold since it was criminalized via the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937. Testifying before the U.S. Congress in 1937, the Commissioner of Narcotics Harry Anslinger testified that the United States had a total of 100,000 marijuana users. Now the government says that more than 100 million Americans have used marijuana. The lure of the forbidden fruit is very powerful, especially for children.

(Editorial, Dec. 22): In Ken Burns’ outstanding PBS documentary Prohibition, it was revealed that alcohol prohibition corrupted all levels of our government-all the way up to the Warren G. Harding White House. The alcohol cartels had hundreds of politicians on their payroll.
